One never knows....
Anyone who knows me knows that I LOVE animals....all kinds. Furry, feathered, slimy, slithery, you name it. And for those of you who don't know, I am now the "mom" to my 4 pups, all either received from family, adopted or rescued. My oldest and dearest, Coubar is an 8 year old Chesapeake Bay Retriever mix. Shortly after I got him from Josh and Molly in 2000, I did some reading up on CBR's and DUH!!, they like water! So, imagine this....Coubar likes to swim....ALOT! He'll swim as long as you can throw something for him to go after. Greg's lake is his favorite place to go...besides the bed!!! Next is my baby, 8 year old Kahlua, whom I rescued from the Humane Society in the spring of 2001. According to them, she's an English Setter mix. Most setters, like retrievers love the water...not my sweetie. The only time she gets anywhere near it is to come be with me in the shallows of Greg's lake. Usually she's there only to make sure I didn't drown in 2 feet of water! After that, dear Ronda called me in April of 2004 to come look at a pathetic bag of bones she found on her doorstep. I raced over and found my dearly beloved, Red. He's a 1 year old Red Nose Pit Bull/Sharpei (?) mix. It's the only way we can justify his EXTRA wrinkles!!! Even the vet got a chuckle before he agreed! Of course, I've always sworn that I would never have a puppy because I knew the damage they can do and aggravation they can cause....but we did it anyway. His face made it hard to say no. Then, after I SWORE again and again and again, NO MORE PUPPIES!!!....I rescued Blackie. He's my 1 year old Black Lab Mix, bundle of energy and appetite. It had to be done and I took him in until I could find him a home. That brings me to the present...no...I haven't taken on any more....thank goodness. I made a committment that I would find Blackie a loving home and I'm making every effort to accomplish that goal. That put me in touch with a wonderful lady by the name of Peggy. She runs Pet Rescue North and has been kind enough to provide Blackie with his neutering surgery (even though Blackie wasn't real happy about it!), all vaccinations and heartworm preventatives. I felt that I needed to do something for her in return so I got as many donations that I could round up and took them to her. Today, Ronda and I took Blackie and Kahlua to the 2004 Pet Expo so that Blackie could get exposure to potential adoptive parents. While there, I learned that Blackie was pretty good at the dog agility and seemed to enjoy it (okay, I had fun with it, too). So much so, that we went back for a second run. After watching the Flyball Demonstration and Blackie so energetically playing with his OWN ball, I started wondering about that possibility, also. Blackie was truly impressive for a dog with his background and lack of even basic obedience training (my fault). He stayed happy and excited the whole day. He was sweet and well behaved and just had a great time, even in all the confusion of hundreds of dogs, their owners, loud music, barking and general excitement all around. I'm very proud of my guy. So here I sit, at 1 am wondering where all of this new information is going to lead me. I've been putting pieces together since my long drive to Peggy's and I'll be excited when the "puzzle" is complete. Blackie needs to be on to bigger and better things. He proved that to me today. He is more than just a house dog or yard dog. True, he's happy running around with Red and Kahlua and getting into things, but he wants and needs more. That was obvious to me today. He is the most wonderful, well rounded, out going pooch I've ever met. As wonderful, loyal and dedicated as Kahlua is to me, she's a one person (ME) dog...plain and simple. While Blackie just loves EVERYBODY!...especially if they have treats!! Add to that, I have truly enjoyed the experience of fostering my guy over the last few months and would like to consider it again. I mentioned this to my mom and Miss Lucy (Mom's neighbor) and as I was mentioning it, I saw Miss Lucy's dog run that she had built for her own pup (that wont use it) and Miss Lucy and I had the same idea. She offered to give it to me for free so that I could use it to house more foster dogs. I told her I would talk to Tony first before making a decision like that. I still haven't decided for sure that it's something I want to do...but I'm mulling it over, letting it roll around in my head to see what I come up with....who knows...I could be on to something. www.petrescuenorth.com www.palsandpawsagility.com Love to all, Kim N Crew
